Anime and Manga tour – Today you’ll explore the quirkier side of Japan in Akihabara, an area of Tokyo made famous by its hundreds of electronics shops, and more recently as the centre for Tokyo’s anime, manga, video game and figurine culture. On this unforgettable tour, your guide will take you deep in the heart of Akihabara, to places tourists don’t usually see.
Your guide today will be waiting for you at Akihabara station, dressed in the same French maid costume made popular by the Japanese maid cafes nearby. On the tour you’ll get a firsthand introduction to Tokyo’s otaku (diehard fan) culture including visits to one-of-a-kind shops, such as one that sells only retro video games, and another that specialises in capsule vending machines.
After the tour of ‘otaku’ shops and sights, your guide will accompany you to the uniquely Japanese Maid Café, where the waitresses will address you as “go-shujin-sama” (“Master”). Here you can rest your feet, enjoy a specially made drink and take a photo with your favourite maid.
Anime and Manga tour – This morning, your guide will pick you up at your hotel and you will spend the day exploring Tokyo’s Anime spots using Tokyo’s extensive public transportation system.
The tour starts from a visit to Character Street under Tokyo station. The guide will introduce you to a street filled with shops, each specialising in a different character or series. There are individual shops dedicated to Hello Kitty, Rilakkuma, Ultraman, Studio Ghibli (well-known for creating Tottoro and Princess Mononoke), Pokemon and so on.

Nakano Broadway
Continue on Nakano Broadway, here you can find a large shopping arcade with four levels of shops. The second and third floors are the most interesting, with a multitude of shops specialising in collector’s items, character figurines, idol merchandise, video game related goods and of course anime and manga related merchandise.

Asagaya Anime street
After Nakano, move on to Asagaya Anime street. This street located under the railway tracks between Koenji and Asagaya has shops related to manga, films, games and novels and even an animation school. The area itself is home to many production studios and the street was recently opened to inspire new anime works and creators.

Akihabara
Today’s tour will end in Akihabara, made famous by its hundreds of electronics shops, but more recently as the center for Tokyo’s Otaku (diehard fan) culture. Here you will find dozens of shops dedicated to anime, manga, figurines, card games and many other collectibles, such as the large chain store, Animate.

After the tour is finished, since you’ll be in Akihabara, you may want to relax and have a coffee at one of the many unique themed cafes (the Gundam Café or AKB Café for example) or go straight for a beer at a Maid Cafe, where the waitresses are dressed as French maids. You can shop at Animate specialising in anime, comics and games. (L)
